Andy's story

Traveling up a hill on two lanes southbound (Pacific Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach), Andy, his passenger and their dog was struck on the left rear corner of his new Smart Car. The drunk driver was attempting to thread his way between two cars in a speeding late model Ford Mustang. Speed was estimated at more than 80mph. Andy's vehicle spun 3 times before striking a curb which launched the Smart Car into a tumble high enough to hit the left front windscreen on the top of a 5 foot wall. A few more spins and the car rested wheels down, near several parked cars. All airbags involved inflated properly. The Mustang proceed to strike other parked cars severely injuring a female occupant. The Mustang driver was arrested for DUI and had no automobile insurance.

Andy, passenger and dog were sore from the violent nature of the accident but were feeling fine days later and felt lucky to be alive and safe. The Smart Car passenger framing envelope and the airbag system proved the safety of the properly designed Smart Car.

Andy's insurance will not be completely sufficient to replace his five week new Smart Car and after waiting for more than a year for delivery may mean giving up the idea of purchasing another Smart Car.

As a family member I am impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of this vehicle and the reality that everything functioned as necessary is quite impressive.
